The Ford Maverick and Nissan Frontier are both trucks that have been in production for many years. They’re both mid-sized trucks with similar features and engines. What will be the deciding factor between these two? You could get either one for a great deal, but here’s how they compare in terms of performance, fuel economy, and more:
Design & Style
The 2023 Ford Maverick is styled to be reminiscent of the classic muscle cars from the 1960s and ’70s. On the other hand, the Nissan Frontier has an aggressive look that appeals more to those who enjoy racing or off-road driving. It’s a bit bigger than the Maverick and can carry up to 7 people instead of 6—which may not seem like a big deal until you have six kids in your car!
The 2023 Ford Maverick’s front end features large headlights with LED daytime running lights (DRLs) and somewhat small foglights below them. The hood also has a unique design element that adds some style without being too over-the-top: two vertical lines near each end of the hood’s centerline just above its locking mechanism for opening/closing it when locked closed during parking or in traffic jams or at red lights, so people don’t hit you while they’re trying to get out of their cars at stoplights when yours is parked next door blocking theirs!
The 2023 Ford Maverick and the 2023 Nissan Frontier have relatively similar interior designs, with a few notable differences. The Maverick has an optional leather-wrapped steering wheel, as well as an available heated front seat option that comes with power lumbar support. The Frontier does not offer these features on its base trim level.
The Nissan Frontier has an available panoramic sunroof, which allows you to enjoy more light in your truck. If you’re looking for more space inside your car or truck, this feature can help fill it out.
The Ford Maverick comes standard with Sync 3 infotainment system that features Apple CarPlay™ integration so you can use your phone while driving safely. You’ll also get voice recognition technology and access to over 2 million apps on the App Store—and yes: Siri® is here too!
Technology & Safety
The 2023 Ford Maverick has a few advanced safety features, including a rearview camera and USB ports in the backseat. The 2023 Nissan Frontier has not yet been rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), but it will likely have similar safety features to its predecessor.
The two pickup trucks’ most notable technologies are their standard infotainment systems–Ford’s SYNC 3 and Nissan’s Infiniti InTouch system–which both offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility as well as hands-free phone calls.
Performance
The 2023 Ford Maverick and the 2023 Nissan Frontier are both powered by a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine that produces 168 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque. In terms of fuel economy, this means you can expect to get about 24/26 mpg in the city/highway respectively on either vehicle. However, if you find a vehicle with an automatic transmission, you may see slightly better fuel efficiency than these numbers indicate, thanks to the more efficient gearing offered by an automatic transmission compared with the manual transmission found on both of these trucks.
The Bottom Line
If you’re looking for a midsize pickup with looks, capability, and comfort that won’t break the bank, there’s no question which truck you should get: The 2023 Ford Ranger. In most respects, it’s the best.
The new Nissan Frontier is still a good choice if you want something reliable and inexpensive—but I’d recommend looking at some of its rivals before deciding what to buy.
